Perched on the Arno river, Florence is the capital of the Tuscan region of Italy. There is historical evidence to suggest people lived in the area in prehistoric times, but the city was first founded in 59BC by the Romans for Julius Caesar.
Its an epicentre of art and art history, one being home to two of the worlds greatest painters of all time, Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci, Florence is credited as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
The city has a distinct medieval feel to it, with rusty red rooftops and the Duomo Cathedral’s spectacular dome rising high above the skyline. Its a pretty city with lots of little piazzas tucked away, perfect for sampling real Italian coffee or a tiramisu.
There are plenty of mind blowing architectural masterpieces, galleries, religious sights and world famous museums to admire, all within walking distance of one another, perfect for soaking up the atmosphere, or head for the gorgeous Tuscan hills for a taste of Italy's most famously pretty countryside.
